Fresh Ethnic Violence Grips Manipur
Manipur, already grappling with months of unrest, witnessed a fresh wave of ethnic violence, compelling the Centre to deploy additional paramilitary forces. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken decisive steps, cancelling political programs in Maharashtra to address the crisis.
On Monday, Shah chaired a high-level meeting with security officials in North Block. In response to escalating tensions, the Centre has ordered 50 more companies of paramilitary forces, including 35 from the CRPF and 15 from the BSF, to be stationed in the violence-hit areas.
The Catalyst: Jiribam’s Tragedy
The unrest escalated following a brutal incident in Jiribam on November 11. Armed militants, believed to be from the Hmar community, attacked a CRPF camp and a relief center, abducting six members of a Meitei family. Tragically, five bodies were discovered in a nearby river, and the sixth body, recovered Monday, is yet to be identified.
This horrifying incident sparked widespread protests across Manipur. On Sunday night, during clashes in Jiribam, 22-year-old Kh Athouba Singh was shot dead near the local police station, further inflaming tensions.
Government’s Immediate Response
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Home Minister Shah dispatched CRPF DG Anish Dayal Singh, a Manipur-cadre IPS officer, to Imphal for ground-level assessments and coordination with security personnel.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs reimposed the Disturbed Areas status under AFSPA in six police station jurisdictions within the valley region, including Jiribam. This measure aims to empower security forces to tackle insurgent activities effectively.
Internet Suspension and Security Measures
To curb misinformation and maintain order, the state government has extended the suspension of Internet services across several districts, including Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. This move, though disruptive, is seen as necessary to prevent further escalation of violence.
NIA Steps In to Investigate Violence
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered three cases linked to the recent incidents. This development highlights the Centre’s intent to thoroughly investigate and bring to justice those responsible for the atrocities.
AFSPA’s Role in Controlling Unrest
The reimposition of AFSPA in key areas underlines the severity of the situation. While the act provides security forces with broad operational powers, it remains a contentious issue, with many questioning its impact on civilian rights.

The additional deployment of 5,000 personnel underscores the government’s determination to restore peace in Manipur. However, the path to stability remains fraught with challenges.
