New Call for Government Accountability

Bimol Akoijam Criticizes Centre for Overlooking Manipur Crisis in President’s Speech

In a hard-hitting speech during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha, Bimol Akoijam, the Member of Parliament for Inner Manipur, expressed his disappointment over the Centre’s failure to acknowledge the severe ethnic violence currently plaguing his home state. Despite the ongoing crisis between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, the President’s Address, which sets the tone for government priorities, made no mention of the situation.

Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Calls Out Government for Ignoring Manipur’s Ongoing Conflict

Akoijam, a member of the Congress party, was visibly frustrated with the Union government’s inaction and silence on the matter. In his speech, he pointed out that the President’s Address, which often highlights important issues facing the nation, failed to even acknowledge the humanitarian crisis in Manipur, which has displaced thousands and caused irreparable harm to communities.

“The government has chosen silence on the issue of Manipur, perhaps to make this crisis invisible, both to the rest of the country and the global community,” Akoijam remarked. He expressed his dismay at the government’s inability to address the ongoing violence, noting that the people of Manipur have been left to suffer in the absence of effective leadership and intervention.

Manipur MP Slams BJP for Failing to Address Ethnic Clashes in President’s Address

The MP did not hold back in his criticism of the ruling BJP, accusing them of mismanaging the situation and of a broader agenda that ignores the diverse ethnic communities of Manipur. He mentioned the historical context of the state’s merger with India in 1949 and compared the government’s response to that period, claiming that it resembled a humiliation for the people of Manipur.

Akoijam also pointed to the BJP’s apparent reluctance to engage in inclusive politics, further exacerbating tensions in the state. He argued that the government’s indifference is not only a political failure but a betrayal of the people who have lived through this ongoing violence for nearly a year.

Ethnic Violence in Manipur: A Crisis Unacknowledged by the Union Government

The conflict in Manipur began in May 2023 and has continued to disrupt the peace of the state, with ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities causing widespread violence. Thousands have been displaced, properties destroyed, and lives lost. Despite the scale of the tragedy, the Union government has faced criticism for its failure to provide a clear plan for addressing the issue or bringing the responsible parties to justice.

Akoijam’s remarks point to a growing frustration among the people of Manipur, who feel that their concerns are being ignored by the national government. He emphasized that the government’s response—or lack thereof—continues to deepen the divide, leaving the people of Manipur isolated in their time of need.

Bimol Akoijam’s Call for Accountability and Action

Throughout his speech, Akoijam made it clear that the Centre’s silence is not an option. He stressed that meaningful dialogue and actions are necessary to end the violence and restore peace. He urged the government to take immediate steps to engage with all parties involved, ensure justice for the victims, and begin the long process of rebuilding trust between the communities.

Akoijam’s call for action is expected to resonate with many across the country, as the Manipur crisis remains one of the most pressing issues in the region. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the pressure on the government to take a more proactive role in resolving the conflict is likely to intensify.
