Russia’s Largest Missile Attack on Ukraine in Months: A Deadly Escalation
On November 18, 2024, Russia unleashed one of its most extensive missile and drone attacks in recent months, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and residential areas. The assault, which included 120 missiles and 90 drones, resulted in substantial damage, leaving many dead and injured. Ukrainian officials reported that air defenses intercepted over half of the threats, but the remaining missiles caused severe destruction, particularly in cities like Sumy and Mykolaiv.
Devastating Impact in Sumy and Mykolaiv
In Sumy, a missile strike on a nine-story residential building resulted in the deaths of eight civilians, including two children. At least dozens were injured, and over 400 residents had to be evacuated. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko described the tragedy as a “devastating loss.” In Mykolaiv, a drone strike claimed the lives of two people and injured several others, including children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of these attacks on civilian areas.
Russia’s Targeted Aerial Offensive: 210 Threats Launched
The Russian offensive included a variety of missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones, which caused significant damage to Ukraine’s power grids. Despite air defenses intercepting 144 out of 210 threats, power outages were widespread in regions like Odesa and Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems to prevent further destruction as winter approaches.
US Approves Long-Range Missiles for Ukraine
In a major shift in US policy, Washington authorized Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike targets within Russian territory. This move is seen as a critical step in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities and is likely to escalate tensions further.
